Amateur (Ham) radio licenses come in three levels which must be earned sequentially. They are:

Technician (Element 2) - Operating privileges in all VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) bands as well as a portion of the 10 Meter band for voice. Technicians can use portions of certain lower bands but you need to know Morse Code. There are 412 questions in the question pool. The exam is 35 multiple choice questions. Passing is 26 out of 35 or 74%.The Technician question pool is effective from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2026
ARRL General Manual 10th Edition
General (Element 3)- Operating privileges in portions of ALL amateur bands. There are 454 questions in the question pool. The exam is 35 multiple choice questions. Passing is 26 out of 35 or 74%.The General question pool is valid from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2027
ARRL Amateur Extra Manual 13th Edition
Amateur Extra (Element 4) - Operating privileges in All portions of All amateur bands. There are 622 questions in the question pool. The exam is 50 multiple choice questions. Passing is 37 out of 50 or 74%.The Amateur Extra question pool is valid from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2028.

 

Bandplan   

The Bandplan brochure provides a visual reference as to the capapbilities, bands / frequencies / modes are available to each license class. T - Technician, G - General and E - Amateur Extra. Note that N - Novice and A - Advanced are no longer being issued but are still valid license classes.
